==> Linux Foundation to Host Moblin Project <==

The Moblin project will be hosted and supported by the Linux Foundation. The LF's hosting will help prime the Moblin project to be the most advanced and open mobile Linux platform.

Moblin is an open source project that supports a Linux-based software platform and is optimized for the next generation of mobile devices including netbooks, mobile Internet devices, in-vehicle infotainment systems, and other embedded devices.

The first developer meeting for the Moblin project under the Linux Foundation took place at the Annual Collaboration Summit this month.

Moblin is hosted at www.moblin.org.

==> Annual Collaboration Summit Held in San Francisco <==

The brightest minds in the Linux server, desktop, mobile and embedded communities gathered at the Hotel Kabuki from April 8-10 in San Francisco, CA, to translate ideas into the projects that will advance the operating system in the year ahead.

The Summit included keynotes and panels on the following topics:

• Moblin State of the Union. Host-sponsor Intel talked about the future of mobile Linux in its Moblin State of the Union keynote and demonstration, presented by Imad Sousou, Director of the Open Source Technology Center, Software and Services Group.

• Oracle Keynote: Linux in the Enterprise, the Journey, Milestones and What’s Ahead? Edward Screven, Chief Corporate Architect at Oracle, spoke about the company’s unique business model that has Linux at its core.

==> Video Contest Winner Revealed <==

During the LF Collaboration Summit, Executive Director Jim Zemlin announced the winner of the “We’re Linux” video contest, which proved more popular than other, similar contests run by commercial entities.

Amitay Tweeto, a 25-year-old graphic designer from Israel, beat out an astonishing 90 contest entrants to win the grand prize for his video “What Does It Mean To Be Free?” Tweeto will receive a trip to Tokyo, Japan to participate in the Linux Foundation’s Japanese Linux Symposium in October 2009.

==> Linux Foundation Site Revamped <==

In February 2009, the LF released a new beta web site to the public. During the week of the Collaboration Summit, the beta site became the new corporate web site for the Foundation (http://linuxfoundation.org).

The new site features a content management system (CMS) that supports improved publishing, membership acquisition, workgroup management, and content management using the open source Drupal 6 as the CMS.  The goal of the implementation was to develop a long-term comprehensive CMS solution that supports the growth and sustainability of the foundation's goals, strategies, and growth. The new system integrates with other LF workgroup and publishing sites, including the upcoming Linux.com.

The New York Times: Intel Turns Over Its Linux Operating System
On Thursday, the nonprofit Linux Foundation plans to announce that it will take over the “stewardship” of the Moblin project from Intel. In this case, stewardship means access to the code of Moblin, which is an open-source operating system based on Linux. It was designed to run computers in products as diverse as netbooks and cars. Essentially, Intel has loosened its grip on the project a bit and put the central control of Moblin in neutral hands.

Ars Technica: Linux Foundation CEO: Linux is "fastest growing platform"
Linux Foundation executive director Jim Zemlin says that Linux adoption is advancing two to three times faster than that of other platforms and that it will be boosted as companies consolidate their technical infrastructure during this economic downturn. Similar views were expressed by an IDC analyst who has recently authored a report which suggests that Linux will withstand the recession better than its competitors.

Wired: Winning ‘We’re Linux’ Video Illustrates Meaning of Freedom
The winner of the “We’re Linux” video contest has been announced--it’s Amitay Tweeto, a freelance graphic designer and user interface consultant from Bet Shemesh, Israel... The contest challenged members of the Linux community to dream up a video advertisement evangelizing the free and open-source software using the theme, “We’re Linux,” a play on Apple’s recent “I’m a Mac” ads, and the “I’m a PC” ads Microsoft put out in response.
