==> Linux Foundation to Build New Linux.com Community <==

The Linux Foundation and SourceForge have announced that the Linux Foundation will be the new host for Linux.com, taking over the editorial and community stewardship for the site. Effective March 3, the Linux.com domain, was transferred to the Linux Foundation. SourceForge will support the Linux Foundation by continuing to sell the advertising for Linux.com.

The new Linux.com site will transform in the months ahead from solely being a news source to a collaborative site that will be “for the community, by the community.” Much like Linux itself, Linux.com will rely on the community to create and drive the content and conversation. While the Linux Foundation will host the collaboration forum, the site will feature the real Linux experts--users and developers--and give them the tools needed to connect with each other and with Linux. Linux.com will provide crucial content, tools and community services to galvanize the power of this group. It will also showcase information for business users of Linux.

Visit http://linux.com to begin exploring the new site.

==> IdeaForge Site to Drive Linux.com Creation <==

The Linux.com stewardship is also coincided with the launch of the IdeaForge web site to capture insight and ideas from Linux.com users (http://ideaforge.linux.com).

While Linux Foundation will provide the collaborative forum, the community of users of Linux.com can guide the direction of the new site. Users are invited to send in their suggestions on what they'd like to see in the new Linux.com on IdeaForge. IdeaForge will enable users to post, vote and discuss their ideas. Members of the Linux Foundation are also encouraged to visit IdeaForge to submit their solutions.

==> Developers to Benefit from LF Training Program <==

The Linux server market is poised to reach $50 billion dollars in three years. The embedded, mobile and netbook markets have exploded recently, resulting in rapid expansion of Linux use in companies previously who used proprietary offerings. When a market grows this quickly, the need for well trained developer talent rises just as precipitously.

The Linux Foundation is meeting this demand with a new training program that will produce developers with unmatched technical skills. Built in concert with its Technical Advisory Board (which comprises leading maintainers from the Linux community), the Linux Foundation's Training Program will feature courses taught by many of the actual community developers. With the Linux Foundation's Training program, attendees know they are receiving training that is vendor-neutral, technically advanced and built in conjunction with the actual leaders of the Linux development community themselves.

Information on upcoming course offerings, as well as online enrollment, is available at: http://events.linuxfoundation.org/training

==> MIPS Technologies Joins the Linux Foundation <==

The Linux Foundation is pleased to announce that MIPS Technologies has become a member of the LF. MIPS Technologies is a leading provider of industry-standard architectures, processors and analog IP for digital consumer, home networking, wireless, communications and business applications.

By joining the Linux Foundation, MIPS Technologies will help drive growth and promotion of Linux among its customer base and beyond. MIPS Technologies joins a leading group of companies who are experiencing business success and market expansion based on customer leverage of Linux and open source technologies.

InformationWeek: Linux(Foundation).Com
My first question for both of them: whose idea was it, exactly, to remake Linux.com in this manner? Turned out they had both been mulling over something like this for a while now, and after finding themselves at the same dinner table, so to speak, they got to talking. After a few months of sussing each other out, the gears have now started to turn in earnest.

"What kind of content will there be on the new Linux.com site? One key thing that they want to offer is documentation and answers as written by pros -- something that's been sorely missing as a whole from the Linux community. Yes, each distribution has its own documents, but the total quality of such documentation varies wildly and is often distribution-specific."

NetworkWorld: Linux Foundation Taking Over Linux.com Site
"The Linux Foundation is a natural home for Linux.com," says Jim Zemlin, executive director of the nonprofit consortium founded in 2007. "The new Linux.com will be for the community, by the community, so input is critical as we work to build and fully launch the new site within a couple months. We're inviting everyone to help define the future of Linux.com."

"The site will include content specific to business users of Linux, he says. (http://www.networkworld.com/news/2009/030309-linux-foundation-site.html)

InfoWorld: Linux Foundation Moves on Training
"Noting that developers are being laid off and that the number of Linux-related job postings has increased, the foundation seeks to meet demand and provide tools for programmers. The Linux Foundation Training Program will begin with courses at the Linux Foundation Annual Collaboration Summit April 8-10 in San Francisco.

"'The key for us is to offer Linux training in a way that's mutual across all the different versions of Linux and that's extremely in-depth,' said Linux Foundation Executive Director Jim Zemlin."

Note on Microsoft TomTom Suit: Calm Down, Hope for the Best, Plan for the Worst

http://www.linux-foundation.org/weblogs/jzemlin/2009/02/26/note-on-microsoft-tomtom-suit-calm-down-hope-for-the-best-plan-for-the-worst/

Right now the Microsoft claim against Tom Tom is a private dispute between those two entities concerning GPS mapping software. We do not feel assumptions should be made about the scope or facts of this case and its inclusion, if any, of Linux-related technology.

Any patent litigator will tell you that the path between asserting a claim under a patent and an actual, final determination that the patent is (1) valid and (2) that the claims of the patent are actually infringed is an extremely long road. If this case is in any way directed at Linux (in fact, Horacio Gutierrez, Microsoft’s corporate vice president and deputy general counsel of Intellectual Property and Licensing, has specifically stated that it isn’t), the Linux ecosystem has enormously sophisticated resources available to assist in the defense of any claim that is made against Linux.
