Am I misusing the term 'error message'? Sorry.

The above log entries cover a 4 second period and include the device disconnecting twice in that time. Note the device numbers that it's coming up as (54 and 55).
Between ~0801 and 0847 yesterday, the "...new full speed USB device number..." appeared 767 times in /var/log/messages.

I expect that the USB spec does not cover this type of scenario.  I think that I'm seeing something similar to this: http://bit.ly/ssHC1Z, which highlights how flakey some device manufacturers are.
