As far as I know, there isn't.  The kernel has to make an assumption
because the drive doesn't say what it's doing.  Besides, this is really
a SCSI question, not a USB question, so it should be posted to the
linux-scsi mailing list.

Have you tried using the uas driver instead of usb-storage?
