Well, this shows that the interface was indeed registered, but the 
usb-storage driver wasn't probed:

I have no idea why not.  You should try enabling CONFIG_DEBUG_DRIVER,
and be sure to modprobe usb-storage before plugging in the drive.

Also, it will be better if you post the dmesg log instead of the system 
log.  Before plugging in the drive, you can do "dmesg -c >/dev/null" to 
clear out the kernel's log buffer.
