This is a difficult problem... Is the usb-storage driver loaded when you plug in the drive? Is CONFIG_USB_LIBUSUAL enabled in your kernel config? Can you build your own kernel for testing? If you can, enable CONFIG_USB_DEBUG and let's see what shows up in the dmesg log.
