Whenever you do get back to your original problem, I'd be happy to discuss with 
you, on-list or off-list, how serial flow control is supposed to work so that 
the actual problem can be discovered and fixed.

I believe there's one remaining problem with the ftdi_sio driver. Perhaps it's 
what your problem is. When CRTSCTS transitions from clear to set (not always 
when set), RTS should be forced if and only if there's output data pending.
