You could also try mtools, which contains a userspace vfat
implementation; maybe the device will handle its sequence of
operations better.

Accessing /dev/sdb without creating a configuration file:

  mdel -i /dev/sdb ::/firmware.bin
  mcopy -i /dev/sdb firmware.bin ::/

(the ':' drive is specified by the '-i' option - originally intended
for working with image files, but works with devices too).
