Imaginative mis-use of a hub

Hello everyone,

I came across this very imaginative mis-use of an USB hub as an AVR
programmer:

http://www.pjrc.com/hub_isp/

At the bottom of the page, the author muses about getting precision
timing out of this contraption by programming it at kernel level, but I
don't think that's possible to do reliably... what's your opinion?
