Let's try again. Does the attached copy of hdparm work for everybody now? It uses ATA_16 by default, for everything.

And forces ATA_16 when it thinks it is talking to an ATAPI device.
Plus, it uses a sector count of one (1) for all IDENTIFY commands.

Note however, that USB-SATA bridge chips from other vendors have
always worked correctly without the need for the sector-count field.

Eg. The bridge that Western Digital uses in their external enclosures has no trouble following the SATA/SATL spec of "n/a"
for the sector-count field.
