A reboot is the only way I have found to restore control. Do this: Build a kernel with CONFIG_PRINTK_TIME, CONFIG_FRAME_POINTER, CONFIG_DEBUG_FS, and CONFIG_USB_DEBUG all enabled. Run your test, and when the audio stops _don't_ try to start or kill any audio applications. Instead attach a copy of the dmesg log to the bug report and post an email message to let us know when the log is ready. Based on the log contents, we'll see what happens next. Going by the information you already provided, I'd guess there's something funky about your nVidia USB controller hardware.
