One other thing to try, again on both types of kernel. After plugging in the camera, unmount the partition (for the patched kernel, of course). Then do: blockdev --flushbufs /dev/sdb (or sd-whatever). Start up a usbmon trace, and then try to mount the partition. That should generate significantly different activity on the two kernels.
