I'd love to do that.  So far, I haven't been able to find
anyone who will support this drive so I can update the
firmware.  AFAIK, the firmware we have is the very latest
version.

I don't think there's anything we can do in linux kernel
to completely eliminate the possibility that this bug will
hit us  -- but we may be able to help make this already very
rare problem slightly more rare...
