Sigh, my fault for consuming all of the rear usb ports on this box,
and pushing the limits of the front usb ports with the cradle.

I've moved the usb cradle to the rear usb ports, and things seem to be
perfectly reliable again...

I apologize for the wasted time and effort :-/
