Full- and low-speed analyzers are available relatively inexpensively.
The Beagle-USB-12 from www.totalphase.com costs $400.  (In fact, I have
one.)  The Beagle-USB-480 (high-speed) costs $1200.

Yikes. Yes, I will have to talk to Mr. Boss about that. I wonder how far he will go in supporting a Linux hardware programmer whose job says he is a research mathematician, but who these days would rather do this kind of thing than work at what I used to do for the previous 30 years.
