Same thing happens if I trigger a reset in the *switched*
device via libusb (but not in the 'default' state).

This is a potentially serious problem. Do you know any devices showing this behavior which drivers using reset as error handling
bind to? In particular this would be any device whose install
disk doesn't vanish but is augmented by the modem.

There are many devices around now which either "re-expose" the pseudo CDROM or make an additional flash card slot available after being switched. Unfortunately, I have had only one of these on my desk for a while to run tests with it. An USB reset dropped this device (Sony Ericsson MD400) back to default mode right away, driver partition freshly connected and SD slot gone. It might be different with other devices; for instance, many Huawei and some Option devices don't even change their device ID, only device/interface class when switched. And these Huaweis have the driver partition visible after switching too.

Unfortunately, I can't find a "dmesg" output for a Huawei during switching. And I have no information about what a reset will do to them.
