An strace would be most helpful. The test progrem for the binary
interface (also called usbmon) worked, last time I checked. Probably
Wireshark (or pcap) does something different.

Would you run the usbmon(8) and see if that works? In case your
distro doesn't have it, build it from source:
 http://people.redhat.com/zaitcev/linux/usbmon-5.4.tar.gz

If it fails too, capture two traces just like you've done with
the patched Wireshark. If usbmon(8) works, run strace on Wireshark,
please. Unfortunately, most likely it won't print the bad data
itself, but at least we'll see what ioctls libpcap of the version
on your box actually uses.
