Incidentally, it's possible to prevent udev and hal from reading those
sectors near the end.  You can simply move or rename the programs that
do it; then udev and hal won't be able to run them.

I don't know where those programs are on OpenSuSE.  On Fedora the two 
files are:

	/lib/udev/vol_id
	/usr/libexec/hald-probe-storage
