I got a Renkforce 986823-card with the mentioned chipset that became unusable with kernel 4.9 - most likely due to a patch that introduced firmware loading for cards without firmware-ROM. The patch was written by Christian Lamparter. I could make changes to kernel source code here and I have the 5.0 rc4 sources. Stefan Kalis
