Do I have to compile a custom kernel to use usbmon?

Hello!

I am from the Linux4nano team and we are trying to get custom code running on the encrypted iPod nano line. We need to snoop the USB port while running iTunes in a VirtualBox in order to determine the DFU version. I was looking into ways to snoop the USB port, and I found that usbmon was one of the most popular methods. From what I understand, however, the kernel needs to be recompiled with special debug options to enable usbmon. I don't have a computer other than my desktop to mess around with, so I'd rather not go the custom kernel route. Is there an alternative to usbmon that doesn't require a debug kernel? Also, is there an easier way than USB snooping that can determine the DFU version? If so, USB snooping would not be necessary.

Thanks in advance,
