I can easily test 2.6.29 so I hope the backporting wasn't much effort and/or wasn't just for me. It still hangs with your patch in 2.6.27.9. I did get some insight as to why this isn't more of a problem. My test program is probably doing something a bit strange. It's doing open/close without any reads or writes before the close.
