it only gets the serial ports.

You can obviously not make a connection over the ppp modem serial interface at the same time as you are connected over the cdc_ether interfaces, you have to choose which connect method you prefer. Keep in mind that there is no management protocol specification for cdc_ether so that is sometimes carried out over a serial interface using AT cmds.
So to answer your worries, yes we want both drivers to bind.
