If you plug it into a powered USB-C hub (yeah, rare to find, I know),
does it work better?

The fact that the hardware keeps reseting itself is a huge red flag that
it might be not be a software issue.

Oh wait, do you have autosuspend enabled for this device?  It might be
disconnecting itself...
