System works perfectly as expected.
Change to kernel 4.4.x or 4.5 and RAID 5 doesnt work. I am not sure
whether its actually RAID 5 at fault or if its the USB Attached SCSI
driver uas.ko, or maybe the host driver xhci-hcd.
Symptoms with kernel 4.4.x, 4.5
Tried to initialise a RAID 5 array with 3 devices as above. The drive
setup is done with gdisk, setting one partition per drive and setting
partition type to fd00 (linux raid). I then use madam -create. The raid
array starts to initialise and recover, as per /proc/mdstat. After a few
minutes, the array initialisation begins to faulter, with the drive
activity lights becoming erratic. After some time, the sata docks seem
to hang with /proc/mdstat saying:

In an attempt to try to pin down the fault, I ran badblocks in write
mode on all 3 drives at the same time to see if the uas.ko module was
doing something strange. Alas, the test works perfectly, with all drives
returning zero bad blocks. I tried setting up a raid 5 array, all on one
disk, ie /dev/sdc1, 2, 3. (this is a stupid way to do raid, but I wanted
to test if the raid array would inititialise successfully using only
one sata controller. The array initialised successfully, leading me to
think that perhaps raid 5 is ok, and that something strange is happening
with the combined interaction of raid 5, xhci-hcd, uas, and the JMicron
controllers.
