Yes, it seems to be a firmware issue. As long as the camera is busy in PTP
mode, it stays on (e.g. fetching previews from shotwell), but when this is
done with many images on the camera (over a couple of tens or hundreds), the
camera shuts down right after command completion and before the import
process can be started.

The problem seems not to happen in mass storage mode (e.g. when mounted by
nautilus/gvfs).

In general I suggest using a card reader instead of the camera, it's also
much faster (esp. with newer memory cards)

Also, I understand this is an old issue, but it's not really documented
anywhere, so I'm replying here for archive purposes.
