For the records, drivers/spi/spi-orion.c states:

/* Some SoCs using this driver support up to 8 chip selects.
 * It is up to the implementer to only use the chip selects
 * that are available.
 */

and then in orion_spi_probe():

        host->num_chipselect = ORION_NUM_CHIPSELECTS;
