I got the original system back!  I put the two new lines ahead of the
lines sending control to pulseaudio and on first boot the system didn't
work.  So I ran speaker-test which must have given pulseaudio a clue
because after the static and me hitting control-c to exit speech came on
the correct speakers.  When I type the speech is very chopped, but I can
experiment with order of lines in asound.conf to see if that will
improve anything.  Also aaplay gave me the correct card number.
