Thanks for your help.
I did try the speakup_dectlk module with the same result.
I'll investigate paul's instruction page.
Chime, my Dectalk     doesn't have a switch. It is only RS-232 via  its serial cable.
Zack, if I have to, I'll investigate a kernal upgrade. But
I  hope   it won't come to that. I've never done one before.
