First thing I would check if I have sound in the console.
Then using lsmod, that speakup_soft indeed was loaded.
Then using ps that espeakup is actually running.

Hi,
I am new to Speakup and Linux in general. I've installed Debian Jessie,
and for some reason, when I Press ctrl+Alt+F1-6, Speakup doesn't talk.
My current setup is a s follows:
I have Espeakup installed and /etc/init.d/espeakup status reports that
it is active. Also, in /etc/modules.conf I have the line:
speakup_soft
However, it doesn't talk, as I said. Am I missing something obvious
here?
Thanks,
Sukil
