Changing Pronunciations for characters

Hi All,

I posted this a while back but didn’t get any response. Does anybody have insights into changing the way certain characters are pronounced, either with Espeak directly or via Speakup’s character handling? I’m trying to get characters from CodePage 437 (smily faces, card suits, etc.) to read properly. The trouble is that the only context I can find these in, Speakup seems to treat them all uniformly as null characters, refusing to give me a hex value for them.
ESpeaks character handling is a bit less obtuse, but it still doesn’t pronounce some of the symbols I want.

Any thoughts on how to remedy this? Why would Speakup refuse to give me a hex value for a “null,” character, when it’s obviously on-screen and shows up?

Thanks much for input :)
