Do you have a Braille display by any chance? Otherwise, I am not sure, it may depend on what you selected during the install. But you could echo bash standard output and standard error to the serial port and see if speakup_soft is loaded, or just try to modprobe speakup_soft, then type espeakup and see what happens -- did you try that? As this is a default insulation here. I guess where we should go is what actually got changed when the system actually does its first boot? I didn't tell you though, I've actually talk to somebody who use virtual box, and the issue apparently does not exist. So whatever it is, it is VM ware workstation specific. > > Sent from my iPhone > > > On Aug 23, 2015, at 2:14 PM, covici@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx wrote: > > > > Ok, can you verify you have sound in your vm, I have a linux vm with > > workstation 11, not using Debian, but I get sound and speakup and espeak > > and all the goodies. However, I can tell you, I have experienced this exact same problem under VMware. What I can tell you is that it is definitely not related to VMware version 11, because the same exact conditions happen in VMware nine. A friend of mine told me that it may be related to how VMware workstation is handling the audio device. However, I have absolutely no way to verify this unfortunately like you, there's not a lighter side assistance near me, but, I can tell you this. The login is actually occurring without any problem. Also, we also know that the PC speaker is enabled. Because, you can press backspace, and you can tell that you are in a console log in. I also tried to install why ASR, thinking that it may be related to speak up. However, there doesn't seem to be any audio in the new VM. I can tell though that the VM actually does have a sound card, and other devices. Sorry I could not be more helpful, but just want to tell you what I am experiencing here. > >> > >> Sent from my iPhone > >> > >>> On Aug 22, 2015, at 1:21 PM, <wb9rsq@xxxxxxxxx> <wb9rsq@xxxxxxxxx> wrote: > >>> > >>> I know from reading earlier threads that some mention of this problem has > >>> been made. > >>> However since I wanted to get a fresh start on solving the problem I hope > >>> that a new message will keep it focused. > >>> I first took a working VM of Debian Wheezy 32 bit and did an update, then > >>> upgrade. > >>> After that I followed instructions on how to upgrade to Debian Jessie. > >>> All seemed to go well. > >>> However on the last reboot suddenly no speakup. > >>> I checked with a sighted friend and the login screen was there and I could > >>> login but no speakup. > >>> So I decided to start a new VM and I tried both Jesse 32 and 64 bit versions > >>> from the 8.1.0 iso dvd1. > >>> Installer talked perfectly through the entire process. > >>> First reboot, no speakup. > >>> Login worked but still no speakup. > >>> So since it is a VM I tried several more times with both versions changing > >>> things like desktop and various servers in the software selection area. > >>> Nothing mattered. > >>> No speakup after reboot to installed machine. > >>> I am not even close to being able to compile or debug.
