If you use the vbox GUI to start the guest, this is correct, you'd be in the guest until you switched back to the host. However, if you choose not to use the vbox GUI, then your only other option is to start your guest using vboxheadless. If you do that, then you will need an alternate method to access the guest, since vboxheadless is what the program name implies, it only starts the guest, and leaves it up to you to determine how you will interact with the guest.
