Hello Hank.  Emacsspeak is a screen reader that functions inside emacs,
a text editor.  Speakup is a screen reader that is built in to the linux
kernel.  Orca is a screen reader that functions under the gnome gui
environment for linux.  You probably want to use speakup for text
console applications, and orca for applications under gnome, such as
firefox.
