ubuntu 11.10 speakup and orca don't work together

Hi again

So I just started my computer running ubuntu 11.10. I get speech with speakup. But, orca is silent. I can tell that orca is running however, because when I go to the console and execute

orca -q

then go back to the deskto and restart orca using alt f2 and typing "orca", I see the orca splash showing on the screen. Pressing orca spacebar brings up the orca prefs dialog. But, I hear no speech.

I have two users on my computer, root and justin.

groups justin

turns up
adam dialout cdrom plugdev lpadman admin pulse-access sambashare

and groups root turns up

pulse pulse-access

It looks like the root has access to fewer groups than justin.

Could someone help me to fix this problem?

Now the problem is that I cannot have speakup and orca running at the same time. it's either one or the other, I think depending on the order that I log in. If I log into unity first, orca works and speakup doesn't, and if I log on to the console first, then speakup speaks and orca doesn't.

I've been searching the internet for the last several hours for instructions on how to make pulseaudio run in systemwide mode in ubuntu 11.10, and have essentially turned up nothing. It looks like they really don't want you to figure this out. Has anyone found a solution for this problem?
