We haven't done anything with socrates for a long time. It has no prebuilt binaries and is only available from cvs. There is a gnome package or not a gnome package but a package which runs under gnome called easyocr on sourceforge. I believe they have ubuntu deb files available for it. Maybe someone has the URL handy I don't. I can look it up however if you can't find it. I don't know anything about it's quality or ease of use however.
