slackware speakup.s kernel

Does not contain sata drivers if the documentation is current on the 
slackware home page.  So using speakup.s to install puts which drivers in 
control of the hard drive with a sata disk in the computer with what 
consequences?  I don't remember, does the boot disk and root disk 
combination go out and check for hardware and install what's needed or 
just use what's in the kernel on the boot disk?
