I read down through the users guide and will check slackware to see if speakup_soft is in the kernel shortly. If that's the case, espeakup probably will be able to come up as the user space stuff gets loaded. However, I have espeak running using portaudio-19 as its base. If this way of running espeak is at least as good as flite or festival maybe another speech support package ought to be added to the users guide. That I don't yet know. I couldn't get the latest version of speechtools and festival to build without errors on slackware 13.0 though which is how I ended up trying what I'm now trying.
