Hi John, on gentoo, for that version of the kernel, I recommend you use the speakup package. So, build, compile and install the kernel, without attempting to install speakup into it. Then, make sure that /usr/src/linux points to the correct kernel, and emerge speakup. That will install the speakup modules. You will get a message from portage when you do that that tells you where to set up the module so that it will autoload when you boot your system. Let me know if you have any questions.
