Retraction: My espeak 1.44.05 is also broken.

Yeah, I'm still using espeak but downgraded to 1.44.02 and have it
blocked from any future upgrades until it gets fixed.  I sure wish I
could use serial ports for my speakout but we've already been down
that road <sigh>.  I can use serial ports for other things but not
with Speakup.
