Sure there is.  It's doable.  However, we don't necessarily want to
unmute all volumes.  What about line-in and mic?  I can think of
instances in which unmuting the microphone would be undesirable.  E.G.,
what happens if both the speaker and microphone are built-in, and both
are unmuted?  The unmute script that I use on my CD is fairly selective
about what it unmutes, even though it tries to unmute all outputs.
I think that the script originally came from a Debian package; my
modifications have been fairly minor.

Again, doable.  Of course, it's special-casing, but I can kind of see
the need for it.
