Espeak under Debian/Ubuntu

I have installed ubuntu 10.10 on a box, and have the speakup modules
installed.
When I installed espeak it pulled in libportaudio2 which pulled in jack
libraries.

Now when I try to run espeak it tells me connection refused as portaudio
can't contact jack.
Short of recompiling portaudio libraries is there a way to tell
espeak/portaudio to use alsa rather than Jack?
I've looked on portaudio.com but haven't seen a way to configure the
portaudio library to do this.

Regards, Kerry.
