I guess the speech engine was festival?  There is an issue with it: the
festival instance started for gdm doesn't get killed by bonobo.  The
gnome maintainers have demoted the dependency to just install espeak by
default, this should be available within a couple of weeks, in any case
for squeeze.  As a workaround, just purge the festival package.

That is the expected behavior at the gdm login prompt.

Just to make sure: how much memory do you have?  You should report the
text of these exception, else we'd need to use divination to be able to
fix them.
