Well, I have 2 systems here, (1 physical, 1 virtual), running debian testing, which still reports itself as 5.0, and I just upgraded both. While I understand that Steve and Chuck seem to be running Squeeze, I'm reporting my observations, since my upgrade dragged in espeak 1.40.02, so I'm guessing that testing, and Squeeze are more or less identical at this point. Anyway, echo $UID, and echo $USER, both produce the expected results on both systems.
