Here's what that gives:

cq:~# dpkg-reconfigure desktop
Package `desktop' is not installed and no info is available.
Use dpkg --info (= dpkg-deb --info) to examine archive files,
and dpkg --contents (= dpkg-deb --contents) to list their contents.
/usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure: desktop is not installed
cq:~# aptitude show desktop
E: Unable to locate package desktop
cq:~#

The real problem seems to be the absence of anything plugged into the
video socket on my back panel.

This is a Debian Sid installation, 2.6.24 kernel.
