Make sure espeak is installed and working, switch to the soft synthesizer either by hand, or as Chuck described in this thread, by using the talkwith script, start espeakup, and all should work. It has worked this way for me anyway. That's the beauty of using espeakup over speech-dispatcher/speechd-up if you want to use espeak for English speech, it's that simple to setup.
