Hi Jan:  I think the latest set of changes we made to the speakup code may
have broken it for versions of the kernel earlier than 2.6.19.  I recommend
you download 2.6.19 and give it a try.  These days they change the kernel
code in interesting and critical ways which means it breaks speakup much
easier than it used to.  We have been working on moving to git so hopefully
in the future one can apply the code in kernel version specific ways which
should help make it more compatible with differing kernels.
