I tried Garnome some time ago; besides it wanting to install stuff you don't necessarily need, somehow it manages to alter your desktop, so that it doesn't look the same as the stock one...Not sure if that's do to some configuration changes or something. Imo your best bet is to wait for Gnome-2.18 to be released, along with Firefox3.
