It gives a weird error message "svgalib: mmap error rrr." The easiest way to set things up with Mplayer is to edit the file .mplayer/config in your home directory. Putting the line "vo=null" in it will instruct Mplayer to use the null video output by default. If you have the framebuffer console coming up at boot time, you could change it to "vo=fbdev," and sighted users would be able to see video.
