Monty, I think you're running into a kernel issue here. What I think the main issue is, is a generic m$ issue. Winblows nt, especially xp, in an attempt to try to get people to be kernel safe decides to lock everyone out, which means you have to go through the kernel to do anything. VmWare may be able to simulate things, but it may not be able to go down to the hardware abstraction layer, which is what you may need if your going to the serial port.
