best linux version to use that is up to date now that fedora core is no longer being updated with speakup

Based on your requirement for the most available precompiled packages, I would
personally recommend Debian.  The number of available packages is currently well
over 20,000 not including unofficial packages.  I am sure Debian will have
everything you need.  A speakup-modified version of Debian Sarge is available
from
